Day tours & game drives

Self-driving, or short on time? A guided drive finds in three hours what you would miss in three days. The best ones are booked in advance, not at the gate.

Guides see what you cannot: the flick of an ear in the grass, tracks on the road, the alarm call of a squirrel that means a leopard is close. A sunrise or night drive in an open vehicle is the single best upgrade to a self-drive trip. Beyond the parks, day trips from Cape Town and Johannesburg reach Big Five reserves within a few hours, and in the Mara a balloon flight at dawn is the one splurge nobody regrets.

What to check before you book

  • Open vehicle or minibus? Open-sided 4x4s with tiered seats are the real thing. Closed minibuses with a pop-top roof are what the cheapest day tours use; you will know from the photos.
  • Group size. Six to nine guests per vehicle is standard. Twelve is too many for everyone to see.
  • What is the guide's qualification? In South Africa look for FGASA; in East Africa, KPSGA (Kenya) or TATO membership. Reviews that mention the guide by name are a good sign.
  • Park fees. Often excluded and paid in cash at the gate. Check, and carry the right currency.
  • Cancellation. The big booking platforms allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Direct bookings often do not.
  • Pick-up. Day trips from Cape Town leave at 5 am for a reason. Confirm the pick-up point and time the day before.

Where to book

We use GetYourGuide and Viator for drives, walks and day trips: verified reviews, free cancellation on most activities and a refund if the operator does not show. Balloon safaris and specialist walking trails are better booked through your camp.
