Binoculars

Start with 8×42 you can hold steady by hand. Treat 12×50 as a second pair for when you can brace it on the window frame.

  • Rest your elbows on the door frame or your knees, and use the neck strap rather than carrying them loose.
  • Set the diopter once before the first drive so both eyes are sharp.
  • One pair each. The sighting is over by the time the second person has focused.

Vortex Crossfire HD 8x42

Consider forA first safari. 8× is an accessible starting point and is steadier by hand.

Steady by hand, bright enough for first and last light, and the harness keeps it on your chest rather than in a bag.

Trade-offEntry-level glass; compare before paying for the Viper's extra detail.

Listing details and purchase checks

Covering up in the sun

Sun shirts

Ventilation, sleeves that roll up and fabric that dries quickly matter more than the label. Stay with khaki, olive, stone or grey.

  • Sleeves up as the morning warms; down and buttoned at dusk, when the mosquitoes arrive.
  • Wash in a basin at camp; a quick-drying shirt is dry by morning, so three shirts cover a week.

Columbia Men's Silver Ridge Utility Lite Long Sleeve

Consider forWarm-weather safari or hiking, where ventilation and moisture management can make a long day more comfortable.

Mesh-backed vents and wicking fabric keep a long drive comfortable; sleeves roll up at midday and down at dusk.

An olive wide-brim hat with a chinstrap
A brim that stays on

Sun hats

A proper brim, and a way to keep the hat on in wind and on an open vehicle.

  • Use the chinstrap on the vehicle. Wind at speed takes an unsecured hat.
  • Flat-folding styles slip inside a soft bag, which suits light-aircraft luggage limits.

Sunday Afternoons Ultra Adventure Hat

Consider forExposed walking routes and safari days. The neck cape adds coverage that a standard cap lacks.

The neck cape covers the one place a cap leaves bare on an open vehicle.

Trade-offCoverage depends on fit; a hat is one part of sun protection, not all of it.

Listing details and purchase checks

What the listing says. UPF 50+, a 3.25-inch split brim, a six-inch neck cape, an adjustable fit and chinstrap, side mesh, a wicking sweatband, a Sunglass Lock, a flat-folding design and a water- and stain-repellent finish.

Check before you buy. Coverage depends on fit and position. A hat is not a complete sun-protection routine.

Keeping gear clean and dry

Dry bags

Three bags, three jobs. Close the roll-top correctly every time. None is promised to survive submersion or to fully protect electronics.

  • Dust is the real enemy on most game drives. A closed roll-top keeps camera kit and clothing clean as well as dry.
  • One bag for clean clothes, one for worn, so you don't unpack everything at each camp.

Sea to Summit Lightweight Dry Bag, 8L

Consider forOrganising smaller gear inside a pack.

Keeps chargers, cables and a spare battery dust-free inside a day pack; the white lining makes things easy to find.

Trade-offCapacity assumes three closure rolls. Not a submersible electronics case.
