Pack the right things
You need less than you think and a few things you would not guess. The full list is a free download; the handful of purchases that matter are below.
Safari packing is governed by one rule most people learn too late: the light aircraft between camps have a soft-bag limit, usually 15 to 20 kg including hand luggage. Everything else follows from that. Neutral colours, layers for cold mornings and hot afternoons, a hat with a brim, and binoculars that are actually yours rather than borrowed from the vehicle.
What to check before you book
- Binoculars. 8x42 is the right size. It is the one purchase that changes every sighting. Do not share a pair.
- A soft bag. Duffels only on light aircraft. A hard suitcase will be left behind in Maun.
- Neutral clothing. Khaki, olive, stone. Not white (dust), not black or dark blue (tsetse flies love them), not camouflage (illegal in some countries).
- A warm layer. Winter mornings on an open vehicle are 5°C. A fleece and a beanie, even in Africa.
- Headlamp and power bank. Camps run on solar and generators; charging is in the main area, not your tent.
- Sun and insects. Factor 50, a wide brim, and a DEET repellent for dusk. Long sleeves at dinner.
