Hire a car or 4x4

Self-driving is the cheapest way to see Kruger and Etosha and the only honest way to do Namibia. The car is the one booking that decides whether the trip is relaxed or stressful.

A standard sedan is enough for Kruger, Pilanesberg, Addo and the main roads of Etosha: the roads are tarred or well-graded gravel, and sitting lower actually helps you see under the bush. Namibia outside Etosha, Botswana's parks and anything in the rainy season need a proper 4x4 with high clearance, two spare wheels and, in Botswana, a rooftop tent if you are camping.

We use a comparison site rather than one rental brand because the same car can be 30 percent cheaper through a different supplier on the same day. Compare, then read the supplier's rating before you click.

What to check before you book

  • Cross-border permission. Taking a South African hire car into Botswana, Namibia or Eswatini needs a letter from the rental company and a fee. Ask at booking, not at the border.
  • Excess and the gravel clause. Many contracts void the cover on gravel roads or cap it at a large excess. Namibia is almost all gravel. Read the clause and buy the full-cover option if it is not included.
  • Tyres and spares. For Namibia and Botswana insist on two spares, a working jack and a compressor. Check the tread before you leave the depot.
  • Unlimited mileage. A Kruger loop from Johannesburg is 1,200 km before you have driven a single game road. Namibia trips run 3,000 km. Limited-mileage deals are a trap.
  • One-way fees. Picking up in Johannesburg and dropping at Kruger's Skukuza airport, or Windhoek to Walvis Bay, is possible but priced. Sometimes a return flight is cheaper.
  • Automatic or manual. Manuals are cheaper and standard. If you cannot drive one, filter for automatic early; they sell out in high season.

Where we book

Discover Cars compares the big international brands and the local suppliers side by side, shows the supplier's rating before you commit, and sells full-cover insurance that removes the excess. Prices are in your own currency and cancellation is free up to 48 hours before pick-up.
