A safari kit comes down to four jobs: seeing the animals, covering up in the sun, keeping gear clean and dry, and staying organised in a soft bag. This guide is the short version of each. We have summarised the manufacturer’s listings and not tested the products ourselves, so every pick says who it suits and what to check first.
If you buy only three things
- Binoculars, one pair each. They change every sighting more than any other purchase.
- A long-sleeve ventilated shirt and a brimmed hat with a chinstrap. Mornings are cold, afternoons are hot and the vehicle is open.
- One or two dry bags. They keep dust off your camera kit and sort clothes in a soft bag.
Planning the rest? Our packing guide and free checklists cover clothing, documents and the small things everyone forgets.
Binoculars
Start with 8×42 you can hold steady by hand. Treat 12×50 as a second pair for when you can support them.
| Pair | Reach | Hand-held steadiness | Think of it as |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crossfire HD 8x42 | 8× | Easiest to hold steady | The sensible first pair |
| Viper HD 8x42 | 8× | Easiest to hold steady | A step up in optics and eye fit |
| Triumph HD 12x50 | 12× | Shows hand movement more | A second pair for supported viewing |
- On the vehicle: rest your elbows on the door frame or your knees, and use the neck strap rather than carrying them loose.
- Adjust the diopter once before the first drive so both eyes are sharp. You then won't need to touch it again.
- One pair each beats sharing. The sighting is over by the time the second person has focused.
Vortex Crossfire HD 8x42
- Consider for
- A first safari. 8× is an accessible starting point and is steadier by hand.

- Check before you buy

Vortex Viper HD 8x42
- Consider for
- Wildlife watchers who put optical detail and adjustable eye fit first.
- What the listing says
- 8×42 HD optics, XR coatings, a locking diopter, twist-up eyecups, Armortek lens protection and a GlassPak harness.
- Check before you buy
- It sits above the Crossfire in the range, so compare before paying for detail you may not need. The same warranty exclusions apply.
Vortex Triumph HD 12x50
- Consider for
- Extra reach on distant wildlife when the binoculars can be supported.
- What the listing says
- 12×50 optics, multi-coated lenses, adjustable eyecups and diopter, tripod adaptability, a neck strap and a GlassPak harness.

Sun shirts
Ventilation, sleeves that roll up and fabric that dries quickly matter more than the label.
- Dawn to midday: roll the sleeves up as it warms, and use the vents and chest pockets for a small notebook or sunglasses.
- Dusk: sleeves down and buttoned. The same shirt then covers your arms in the evening.
- Colour: stay with khaki, olive, stone or grey, as in our packing guide.
Columbia Men's Silver Ridge Utility Lite Long Sleeve
- Consider for
- Warm-weather safari or hiking, where ventilation and moisture management can make a long day more comfortable.
- What the listing says
- 100% recycled polyester with Omni-Wick moisture-wicking fabric, Omni-Shade sun protection, mesh-lined back vents, roll-up sleeves with snap holders, two chest pockets and an antimicrobial treatment.
- Check before you buy
- Choose by fit and sleeve coverage. The listing doesn't state a UPF rating, so check the page if sun rating matters to you.
Columbia PFG Bahama II Long Sleeve
- Consider for
- Warm-weather game drives and casual outdoor travel.
- What the listing says
- 100% nylon, machine washable and quick drying, with hidden shoulder vents, chest pockets with hook-and-loop closures, roll-up sleeves and Omni-Shade sun protection.
- Check before you buy
- The listing gives conflicting sun-protection ratings, so check the UPF on the page before you rely on it. The fit is relaxed and may not suit everyone.
33,000ft Men's Long Sleeve Sun Shirt
- Consider for
- Outdoor travel that needs small-item storage on the shirt.
- What the listing says
- Polyester with seller-claimed UPF 50+, ventilation, moisture wicking, a water- and stain-resistant finish, two chest pockets, a sunglasses loop, a pen slot, a glasses-cleaning cloth at the hem, roll-up tabs and adjustable cuffs.

Toumett Women's Long Sleeve Sun Shirt

- Lightweight, relaxed-fit polyester, machine washable, with seller-claimed UPF 50/50+, quick drying, mesh-lined back vents, roll-up sleeves with tabs, chest pockets and a sunglasses hanger.
- Check before you buy
- Use the size chart rather than assuming the fit.
Sun hats
A proper brim, and a way to keep the hat on in wind and on an open vehicle.
- Open vehicle: use the chinstrap. Wind at speed takes an unsecured hat.
- Packing: flat-folding styles slip inside a soft bag, which suits light-aircraft luggage limits.
Sunday Afternoons Ultra Adventure Hat
- Consider for
- Exposed walking routes and safari days. The neck cape adds coverage that a standard cap lacks.
- What the listing says
- UPF 50+, a 3.25-inch split brim, a six-inch neck cape, an adjustable fit and chinstrap, side mesh, a wicking sweatband, a Sunglass Lock, a flat-folding design and a water- and stain-repellent finish.
- Check before you buy
- Coverage depends on fit and position. A hat is not a complete sun-protection routine.
Sunday Afternoons Charter Hat
- Consider for
- General outdoor travel and time near water.
- What the listing says
- UPF 50+, a brim of about 3.25 inches at the front and 3.5 inches at the rear, a foam-core brim that floats, a mesh-ventilated crown, a wicking sweatband, an adjustable crown and chinstrap, and a Sunglass Lock.
- Check before you buy
- A floating brim is not a guarantee the hat can't be lost.
Solbari Traveler Broad Brim Hat
- Consider for
- Transfers and breezy sightseeing, where adjustable retention and flat packing help.
- What the listing says
- A unisex hat with UPF 50+, a three-inch brim, 86% nylon and 14% elastane, a locking chinstrap, a rear drawstring, ventilation eyelets, a sweatband and a flat-packing design. The fabric is water-resistant.
- Check before you buy
- Confirm head size and fit. Water-resistant is not waterproof.
Dry bags
Three bags, three jobs. Close the roll-top correctly every time. None of these is promised to survive submersion or to fully protect electronics.
| Bag | Practical role | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Lightweight 8L | General pack organisation and separating small items. The white interior helps you find contents. | Moderate-duty fabric, and a smaller capacity than the other two. |
| Ultra-Sil 20L | Clothing and gear inside a backpack where low weight matters. | Thin fabric is less suited to exposed abrasion. |
| Big River 20L | Exposed storage where tougher fabric and lash points are useful. | Heavier than the Ultra-Sil. |
- Dust is the real enemy on most game drives. A closed roll-top keeps camera kit, spare batteries and clothing clean as well as dry.
- Colour code: one bag for clean clothes, one for worn, so you don't unpack everything at each camp.
Sea to Summit Lightweight Dry Bag, 8L
- Consider for
- Organising smaller gear inside a pack.
- What the listing says
- PU-coated 70D nylon with a water-repellent finish, taped double-stitched seams, a white interior, a Hypalon roll-top, attachment points, an oval base and a replaceable repair buckle. Closed size 7.8 × 6.5 × 15.4 inches, about 0.15 lb.
- Check before you buy
- The capacity assumes three closure rolls. It is not a submersible electronics case.
Sea to Summit Big River Dry Bag, 20L
- Consider for
- Exposed bags on boat transfers or vehicle trips.
- What the listing says
- Abrasion-resistant TPU-coated 420D nylon with a reinforced base, taped double-stitched seams, a white interior laminate, a Hypalon roll-top, easy-grab features, multiple lash points and a replaceable repair buckle. Closed size 10.4 × 9.6 × 18.9 inches, about 0.55 lb.
- Check before you buy
- It is heavier than the Ultra-Sil. The capacity assumes three rolls, and immersion protection is not promised.
Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Dry Bag, 20L
- Consider for
- Keeping clothing organised inside a backpack with little added weight.
- What the listing says
- 30D Cordura ripstop nylon (bluesign-approved), a slippery finish for packing, translucent material, a listed 2,000 mm waterhead, taped and reinforced seams, a Hypalon roll-top, an oval base and a replaceable buckle. Closed size 10.6 × 9.3 × 18.6 inches, about 0.13 lb.
- Check before you buy
- The thin fabric is lighter-duty than the Big River and is not for rugged external use. It is not a submersible bag.
