The best time to visit Kruger, month by month

There is no bad month, but there are very different ones. Here is what each part of the year actually gives you.

Kruger sits in South Africa's summer-rainfall region, so the seasons are the reverse of Europe and North America. The bush is dry and open in winter, lush and closed in summer, and that single fact decides most of what follows.

May to August: the dry winter

The grass is short, the trees have dropped their leaves, and the rivers and waterholes are the only water. Animals are easier to see and more predictable; a morning at a waterhole in July can be as good as any game drive. Days are mild and sunny, 20 to 25°C, and the early mornings on an open vehicle are properly cold, with frost in the south on some nights. Malaria risk is at its lowest. The one caution is the school holidays in late June and July, when the southern camps fill up. Book early.

September to October: late dry season

The best game viewing of the year, in many guides' view. The last water draws everything, the heat builds through October to 35°C and beyond, and the first storms break the drought, usually in late October. Impala lambs and other newborns arrive with the rains. Fewer visitors than winter, and the lodges are good value before the December rush.

November to March: the green season

Hot, humid and green, with dramatic afternoon thunderstorms that clear by evening. The grass is tall and the bush thick, so you work harder for sightings and see fewer animals per hour. In return: migrant birds in their hundreds, young animals everywhere, a landscape that photographs like a painting, and empty roads, except over Christmas. Malaria risk is highest. If you only have a few days, this is the hardest season to get lucky in.

April: the sweet spot

The rains stop, the heat eases, the bush is still green but starting to thin, and the holiday crowds have gone. Many regulars think April and May are the best months in Kruger. Prices are shoulder-season.

A note on Cape Town

If you are combining Kruger with the Cape, the two run in opposite seasons: Cape Town is at its best from November to March, when Kruger is at its wettest. The compromise months are April, May, September and October, when both are good and neither is at its peak.

In one line

For a first safari with limited time, go between May and October. For birds, babies and beauty, and if you can stay longer, the green season rewards patience.
